Four Nobel laureates have jointly issued a statement in disapprobation of state sponsored violence and discrimination against sexual minorities. Many of these countries’ governments in the past have justified their discrimination and persecution with their claim of “preservation of cultural values”.
The four figures behind the statement are Archbishop Desmond Tutu (South Africa), Dr Shirin Ebadi (Iran), Professor Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh), and Professor Jody Williams (USA).
I think it is truly wonderful that two of the four figures are from places that are notorious for their persecution and torture of LGBT people. Sexual activities between people of the same sex are illegal in both Islamic majority Bangladesh & Iran.
This joint statement will surely irk and prove to communities and countries of a non-Western background that homosexuality is not a Western rooted disease. Homosexuals exist in every culture on the planet and they deserve to be treated as equal beings…
